Jan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating from Towson University, Maryland, she taught second grade, got married and raised five children. Miniscule paychecks motivated her to seek employment with the Social Security Administration, where she rose through the ranks to become a branch office supervisor. Losing her hair from stress, she chucked bureaucracy for entrepreneurship and launched Canine Clippers Mobile Pet Groomers, which she eventually built into the largest business of its kind in Maryland. She has been noted in Baltimore Magazine as “Baltimore’s Best Mobile Pet Groomer.” She has written stories and profiles for various magazines, sits on the board of the Gulf Coast Writer’s Association, and is a member of the National Dog Groomers Association of America. Since retiring, Jan and her husband Niel, along with their rescue dog, Sasha, live in Ft. Myers, Florida.
